GLT Nordic is committed to the safeguarding and welfare of every student involved in our programs.

We understand safeguarding as based the principles of:

  • Empowerment: people being supported and encouraged to make their own decisions and give informed consent.
  • Prevention: it is better to act before harm occurs.
  • Proportionality: the least intrusive response appropriate to the risk presented.
  • Protection: support and representation for those in greatest need.

When it comes to adults, safeguarding involves:

  • protecting the health, wellbeing, and human rights of adults at risk,
  • enabling them to live safely, free from abuse and neglect,
  • making sure that the adult’s wellbeing is supported and
  • their views, wishes, feelings and beliefs are respected when agreeing on any action.

Since we are dealing with adult education, safeguarding children is not specified in this document. We recognize that it is an area of huge importance and national guidelines and legislation should be adhered to whenever appropriate.

All team and staff members, teachers and helpers involved in GLT Nordic activities are expected to subscribe to these principles and to act accordingly. This includes immediately bringing any concern to the awareness of the team. Any information will be considered confidential within the team and will only be shared in line with general data protection and legislation.

Students are encouraged to bring their concerns to their designated supervisor or, if that does not work, to any other team member. Students need to know that their information will be shared within the team according to the confidentiality guidelines above.

As part of our safeguarding policy all students are in a peer group for easy access to support. Each peer group is connected to a supervision group with a designated supervisor. We recommend that students follow this line of command to strengthen the network and sense of community.

It is important that people within GLT Nordic have the confidence to come forward to speak or act if they are unhappy with anything. Whistleblowing occurs when a person raises a concern about dangerous or illegal activity or any wrongdoing within the organization. This includes concerns about anyone involved, staff or students. We consider it a requirement by GLT Nordic to protect whistle-blowers.
